Our Story

Hedgedog Brewing, in Virginia Water is a family owned and managed Craft Brewery.

We exist to create fantastic Craft Beer – that means a product, that from the first sip, makes you experience a wow moment! Bringing you that wow experience involves using the finest quality ingredients and sourcing them responsibly. We create and brew all our beer recipes in-house and we are all unashamedly in search of constant repeatable perfection. We like to deliver beer to our customers as fresh as possible making them the best beers in Virginia Water and Great Britain if not the world. Our loyal customers are craft beer lovers – people that appreciate great beers, beers with that perfect balance, that keeps on delivering great flavour.

We were long-time homebrewers and had considered opening a brewery as far back as our schooldays, but that was regularly dismissed as a silly idea. Then, as fortune would have it, in 2012 we paid a visit to the first legal craft brewery in Houston Texas, and in a flash, the “we-can-do-this-too” thought leaped into mind. The thought just stayed there, for a while that is.

Tired of the 9 to 5 and unimpressed with the industrially produced beer and boring, flavour free, ‘premium’ lagers – Marc and Sheila quit their day jobs to test the waters and started our 80 square foot experimental fledgling brewery.

We formed Hedgedog Brewing officially in 2013 with one simple mission, “Brew the beers we wanted to drink above all other brands.”  Our first keg of beer shipped on the 8th of November 2013.

While we were in start-up mode, we enlisted at the world-famous VLB Brew College in Berlin to study and understand the technology of both, commercial craft brewing, brewery management, and microbiology; and suddenly we became full-time professional brewers.

On October 1st, 2014 we moved into Unit number 5 at Stroude Farm in Virginia Water as Hedgedog Brewing moved from an experiment to reality. We put our first 200 litre stainless steel brew system into production and began delivering fantastic beer locally. Starting small, with unpretentious beginnings, we established a great reputation while getting great beer into the hands of beer lovers across Great Britain, even winning Beer of the Festival at Ascot beer festival.

Soon after we moved into our new premises we outgrew our first system began building a new 10 Barrel a Day brewhouse powered by our very own in-house designed Computer Control system.

For 8 years our small crew has done everything at the brewery, design the beer, brew the beer, clear the beer, keg the beer, cask the beer, can the beer, sell the beer and drink the beer. We take pride in everything – all our visitors compliment us on being the cleanest brewery they have ever been to.

We also feed the local horses, cows and bulls with leftover grist after a brew day, and we look after the HedgeDogs, when they magically appear. For us, this is a lifestyle, not a job. We believe that this special energy, shows up in the beers we make – our beers have soul.

In 2019 we teamed up with clunkydoodles, this genius of design and branding has led to the most awesome beer label designs and branding we have come across. Every can is a work of art – our labels even have a distinct Hedgedog touch-and-feel experience built into them.

COVID-19, hit all UK breweries hard, with no pubs open we lost all of our client base overnight – it put a huge dent in our 2020 and 2021 plans. We had to pivot fast – we started packing our beer in cans and we opened our web shop to the public in 2021 and are now able to deliver our superb beer direct – from the brewery to your door, now everyone has access to our terrific beers.

In 2022 we decided to upscale our branding and after being asked by so many people we finally tasked clunkydoodles with drawing a likeness of a HedgeDog, so we could show all people great and small what they really look like.

We brew a variety of different beers; some are for everyday drinking, some are seasonal, some are brew master’s special release, and the odd special recipes are single batch brews. They are available on-line and in local pubs and we occasionally appear “live” at Craft & Farmers Markets that take place in and around Surrey.

If you don’t find us in restaurants, groceries, delicatessens, wine shops and warehouses in Surrey, and all over Great Britain. Remember to ask for us.

If you would like to see our beer available at any outlet near you, will you please ask the folks who run the outlets to contact us.
